NEPAL

A dream on mine had always been to photograph Mt. Everest with a 4X5 camera. I did that in 1999. My guide was Nima, who had been on several American climbing exhibitions, and summited 5 times. It was like a piper cub being piloted by an astronaut. It all went quite well because we took our time until we were trapped in a lodge at 14,000 feet by a blizzard for 3 days. I thought the trip was over but the weather cleared and we were able to get up an adjacent valley to Gokyo at 15.500 feet. From there we climbed up to Gokyo Re directly across from Everest at 17.500 feet.

TASMANIA

Tasmania became isolated from the main landmass of Australia about 12,000 years ago as the last Great glaciation eased. It remains unique in it’s landscape and animals. I have the good fortune to take a photographic workshop in 2007 and then spend another week traveling and photographing.

ANASAZI RUINS

I initially discovered the desert southwest of the United States because of the vast landscape and unique slot canyons but fell in love with the small structures left by the ancestors of the modern Pueblo Indians. These small granaries were built under overhangs hight above the river valley. The all face south to catch the winter sun. They also command very defensive positions. They were built before 1300 a.d. when the great Anasazi trading culture disintegrated for reasons a mystery to this day.

GRAND CANYON

The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is one of the natural wonders of the world. It is spectacular from the rim as many tourists will attest. But seeing it from river level and exploring the side canyons adds another dimension. I have been privileged to do float trips down the canyon on four occasions. Putting in at Lees ferry and taking out 225 miles down the river Diamond Ranch has allowed me to capture the images included here.

FACES OF VIET NAM

The Montegard people of North Vietnam live with in their own culture groups and speak their own language. They integrate into the population minimally. These tribes were pushed out of southern China 200-300 years ago. Similar tribes in the Central Highlands help American troops during the Vietnamese war. They paid a dear price for that help. The people are very shy and reticent. It was only with the help of a dear friend, Son Nguyen, that I was able to photograph them. I consider it a great privilege.
